Guidelines for Assisting Athletes with Alcohol and Other Drug Problems.
Spang, Bruce P.
This booklet shows how to adapt and implement a comprehensive program on alcohol and drug abuse prevention to the sports environment in schools. It describes how athletic directors, coaches, parents, and athletes can break the "no talk rule" about alcohol and drug problems with athletes. The preface claims that athletic directors and coaches can have a major impact on chemical use by team members when supported by a policy which encourages students to get help for themselves and friends. The first section deals with sports chemical health, how it affects the whole person and how to face the problem. The second section describes athletic policy and procedures, including sample policy and procedures, and policy implementation. The third section discusses major program responsibilities of athletic directors, coaches, athletes and captains, and parents. The fourth section provides model letters, agendas, and awareness exercises. Awareness exercises cover the topics of belief systems, concerns of performers, effects of chemical use, coaches as role models, identification simulation, chemical surveys, and planning for sports prevention programs. A bibliography of print materials and an annotated list of 27 audiovisuals available on the topics of athletics and substance abuse, chemical dependency, enabling, self-esteem and self-awareness, highway safety, and other drug-related films is included.
