An Unforgiving Enemy: AIDS. Student Reader and Teacher's Guide.
Adult Education Services, Johnstown, PA.
These adult basic education instructional materials on the prevention of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) include a student reader and a teacher's guide. The student reader contains six chapters. Chapter 1 introduces two characters--Ricco and Francis--and focuses on the definition of AIDS, the three stages of the disease, the cause, and the origin of the virus. Chapter 2 identifies the five categories of adults most likely to get AIDS. Chapter 3 attempts to determine how Francis got AIDS. Focus of Chapter 4 is on recognizing the symptoms of people with AIDS. It traces the procedure for antibody testing and deals with mental attitudes toward test results. Chapter 5 emphasizes practicing "safe sex." Chapter 6 deals with up-to-date information on AIDS, attempts to discredit the myths, looks at AIDS in the workplace, and encourages responsible decision making between partners. It concludes with Francis facing the final stages of the disease with Ricco's friendship and support. Recommendations for persons testing positively and a list of information hotlines and publications are provided. The teacher's guide provides the following material for each chapter: a list of terms for review with definitions, discussion points, suggested activities, a listing of additional resources, handout and visual-aid masters, and information sheets.
