The development and implementation of an adolescent suicide prevention program at the Fairfax County Public Schools in 1982 is described. The major components of the program are described: (1) background; (2) organizing and planning; (3) resources; (4) workshops; (5) activities for students; and (6) evaluation and review. Emergency visits to mental health facilities are an essential step in creating a community safety net. A copy of the guidelines for dealing with a suicide is included. Also included is a student stress program that, while circumventing direct discussion of suicide with students, focuses on many of the factors found to be prevalent in the populations at risk. Peer counseling is another forum in which issues related to suicide may arise; an excerpt of the peer counseling curriculum is included. Appended is a 63-item bibliography. (SI)
