This community action guide was developed to implement the strategies for the advancement of women developed at the United Nations world conference in Nairobi that ended the Decade for Women in 1985. The guide is intended to: (1) increase understanding and awareness of the existence of the Nairobi Forward-Looking Strategies for the Advancement of Women document and to provide suggestions for using that document in an active way; (2) provide women with enough background on the Forward-Looking Strategies document to help them develop campaigns for pressuring their governments to enforce the recommendations to which they agreed in Nairobi; and (3) be used along with the official document that contains the exact text of the Forward-Looking Strategies. The guide is organized in five sections. The first four sections cover the rationale for the community action guide, the Nairobi Forward-Looking Strategies, answers to questions about the strategies, and some ideas for using the strategies document. The final, longest section, presents 13 selected themes from the Forward-Looking Strategies as guidelines to action. The themes are: decision making; education and training; employment; energy and environment; exploitation of women; food, water, and agriculture; health; housing and transportation; legal rights; media and communications; migrants and refugees; peace; and young and old women.
