A Study of Effective and Ineffective Practices in Chapter 1 Programs for Junior High School Students. Progress Report. June 1986.
Los Angeles Unified School District, CA. Research and Evaluation Branch.
This report describes the activities and research directions taken during the second year of an anticipated four-school-year study that attempts to identify effective instructional practices in Chapter 1 junior high schools in Los Angeles (California). The report is divided into four sections. Section 1 reviews the purposes of the study and clarifies the research questions that are to be addressed. Section 2 describes the research activities of the 1985-86 school year, and discusses some tentative findings. The class activities of 48 teachers, six in each of eight selected Chapter 1 junior high schools, were observed over a two-day period. In the classes observed, teaching proceeded very much like office management, i.e., as a matter of assigning and supervising instructional"jobs." A relatively narrow range of teaching strategies and materials were used in the lessons observed; however, there was a wide range of teaching proficiency. Section 3 describes the staff training activities and assesses the progress made. Section 4 outlines future plans for the study. Appendices present the following: (1) examples of the classroom lessons observed; (2) training manual for the study team; and (3) protocols used by the study team. (BJV)
