Improving Communication with Elementary School Parents through a Targeted Communications Program Involving Classroom Teachers and the Principal.
Richardson, Donald M.
An elementary school principal implemented a practicum to improve school-home communication at a school where administrators believed that a history of poor communication between parents and teachers negatively influenced the school's academic and parent involvement programs. Specific practicum goals were to improve: (1) school-home communication to a level perceived as satisfactory by 70 percent of the parents; and (2) the school-home relationship through the implementation of a targeted written and personal communication program. The program focused on developing processes that would improve school-home communication through written and personal approaches with parents. Results were positive. Related materials, including a parent attitude survey, a school-to-home communication survey, a staff survey on the school-home communication program, a grade-level newsletter information collection form, a teleconference documentation form, and an outline of 10 teacher training sessions.
