Student Enrollment Data and Trends in the Public Community Colleges of Illinois: Fall 1988.
Illinois Community Coll. Board, Springfield.
Fall 1988 enrollment data were collected from the 50 Illinois public community colleges and compared with data from earlier years. The colleges reported enrollments at the end of the regular fall registration period and, therefore, did not include students who enrolled during the term. Analyses of the data revealed that: (1) in fall 1988, the colleges enrolled 328,276 students in instructional credit courses, a 1.3% increase from fall 1987; (2) the full-time equivalent enrollment was 166,291, a 3.2% increase from fall 1987; (3) the proportion of full-time students increased from 29.5% in fall 1987 to 29.9% in fall 1988, with almost half of these full-time students enrolled in pre-baccalaureate transfer curricula; (4) the number of both male and female students increased from the previous year, with the number of male students increasing at a higher rate; (5) though black enrollments declined for the fourth consecutive year, overall minority enrollment increased in both numbers and the proportion of total enrollment; (6) the median age of community college students was 27.0 years, and the mean age was 30.7; (7) nearly 43% of the students enrolled had been enrolled at the same college the previous term; and (8) enrollment increases were found in pre-baccalaureate transfer, vocational skills, and remedial/adult basic education/adult secondary education programs.
