Schools, Computers, and Learning Project. Interim Report #1 from the Kingston Regional Pilot Test Centre: A Description of the Research Setting.

This report describes the research setting for the Schools, Computers, and Learning Project, an ongoing longitudinal and multidimensional study of the mutual adaptation of classroom practice and computer technology. Following a brief discussion of the research intentions and an overview of the research methodology, the report is divided into five sections: (1) the research project (team, focus, methodology, and agendas in the language arts, social and environmental studies, music and the special needs student, mathematics, and a computational perspective on schooling); (2) the school as a project site (demography, programs, physical layout, and computer facilities and resources); (3) the school and the community (the neighborhood and the parent group); (4) the school and the board of education (board resources, policies, and computer initiatives); and (5) a detailed portrait of "Hampton" public school (grade by grade descriptions of K-6 teachers and classes as well as special teachers and administrators). It is noted that the school described here is the first of a group of regional pilot test centers, each of which will have a different focus; and the report is based on data gathered as the computers were being installed and as patterns of use were emerging, and is intended to serve as a foundation for subsequent reports on the evolution of computer use in the classroom.
