Architecture: Building My World. Monograph 13.
Russell, Rand
This book contains 30 activities that the instructor can use to infuse architectural education into other studies, such as mathematics, language arts, social studies, and formal art education. Some general suggestions are offered for getting the teacher started. A chart relates objectives and infusion subjects to the activities. Following the chart is a sample activity in which important features are identified. A listing of suggested books and films is provided. The text of each activity is written to communicate desired concepts first to the instructor so that they can be effectively related to the students. The primary and secondary activity objectives are indicated for each activity. These components are also provided for each of the activities: procedure for activity execution, suggested subjects for activity infusion, suggested activities to reinforce or expand activity concept, people and places representative of the activity concept, key and related vocabulary, and a graphic activity illustration, work space, or historical structure. Sample concepts include measurement, problem solving, planning, environment, architectual models, two- and three-dimensional planning, elevation, windows, movement, seasonal change, natural and built form, pattern, texture, color, paper, modular structures, cities, cultural differences, "tops" (finishing structures), function, building materials, shape, tents, vocabulary, perspective, traffic flow, floorplan, and scale.
