A Status Report on Children in America's Cities: A 52-City Survey.
United States Conference of Mayors, Washington, DC.; United States Conference of City Human Services Officials, Washington, DC.
A survey of officials in 52 cities in the United States gathered information on the conditions and issues relating to urban children, on how city governments are structured to respond to those needs, and on city programs and initiatives which benefit children. Information provided by the cities was supplemented by data from the Bureau of the Census and the National Center for Health Statistics. The following topics are explored: (1) problems affecting cities; (2) problems facing children of all income levels in cities; (3) problems facing low-income children; (4) poverty; (5) public assistance programs; (6) school dropout problems; (7) child care; (8) early childhood education; (9) infant health; and (10) adolescent pregnancy. Statistical data are included on eight tables. Existing city programs and initiatives are briefly described in relation to each topic. City officials commented on the policy issues that should be addressed by the next President of the United States. Excerpts concerning children's issues from the "state of the city" addresses of the mayors in 24 of the survey cities are also included. The appendix includes a copy of the survey questionnaire.
