The Engineering of the Paideia Proposal: The First Year, 1984-85.

The Paideia Program is an integrated liberal arts curriculum implemented in elementary and secondary Chicago, Illinois, public schools. This report highlights its operation in Sullivan High School. Program components include the following: (1) didactic teaching; (2) coaching; and (3) Socratic questioning of guided discussion. Students must acquire a core of general knowledge, as well as develop fundamental skills. This report, covering 1984-85, the first year of the program's operation, is divided into seven chapters. Chapter 1 comprises the following: (1) The Engineering of the Paedia Proposal; and (2) The Philosophy and Objectives of Sullivan High School. Chapter 2 comprises the following: (1) Faculty Selection and Re-education; (2) Student Selection; (3) Programming; (4) The All-School Seminar; and (5) The All-School Assembly. Chapter 3 comprises the following: (1) Classroom, Coaching and Community; (2) Classroom Visitation; (3) Coaching--Group Guidance; and (4) Parent-Community Involvement. Chapters 4 and 5 comprise Program Evaluation and Summary and Recommendations respectively. Chapter 6 consists of The Paideia Diary--The Administrative Notebook. Chapter 7, the Appendix, comprises the following: (1) Bibliography; (2) Principal Operants; (3) The Carnegie Grant Proposal; (4) The Chicago Summer Institute; (5) the program evaluation report, including the Student Attitude toward Reading survey; the Student Opinion Questionnaire; the Teacher Orientation Questionnaire; and the Paideia Program Year-End Report. Statistical data are included on 22 tables. Ten charts are also included. (FMW)
