Sci-Math: Applications in Proportional Problem Solving. Module Two.
Goodstein, Madeline P.
Sci-Math is an interdisciplinary curriculum intended to help students develop the math skills needed for science, especially dimensional analysis, ratio, and the concept of proportion. Sci-Math is divided into two modules with each module having a student and teacher's guide. Module one is a pre-algebra module dealing with the arithmetic and logic of proportions while this module is an algebra module that examines the symbolic equations and graphing of proportions. Both modules can be integrated into a one-year course in physical science or used selectively in a chemistry course with students of poor math skills. The student guide for this module contains seven concepts: (1) determining relationships; (2) determining meaning from equations; (3) writing direct proportion equations; (4) using inverse proportions; (5) an advanced treatment of equations; (6) problem solving; and (7) graphs. Each concept is defined with sample problems and many homework problems. Each concept has at least one activity and the answers to selected problems are given. (ML)
