Providing Preschool Inservice Training To Increase Communication and Teamwork Spirit.
Gutwein, Belinda C.
The owner-operator of a child care center, nursery school, and kindergarten organization located in the Pennsylvania heartland implemented a practicum providing in-service programs in communication to child caregivers working in the surrounding area. Based on a needs assessment completed by directors in nine centers, nine workshops in three topic areas were conducted. Topics included: (1) Improving Communications and Interpersonal Skills for Child Care Providers; (2) Avoiding Stress and Burnout in the Child Care Environment; and (3) Teamwork in the Child Care Atmosphere. Practicum evaluation data indicated that the intervention was enthusiastically received and was successful. Participants gained personal and professional knowledge likely to aid them in their work environments. Six-week follow-up data indicated increased awareness, teamwork, communication, and professionalism among those who had attended the workshops and completed the survey. Participants wanted additional, similar workshops to improve their self-awareness and understanding of co-workers in a workplace characterized by a high level of turnover. (RH)
