Development of a Substance Abuse Prevention Program for At-Risk Two- to Five-Year-Olds.
Howze, Janice Kate
A child caregiver developed a substance abuse intervention and prevention program for preschool children between 2 and 5 years of age who were at risk for substance abuse. The practicum effort resulted in a preschool substance abuse curriculum that included information on drugs, offered techniques for enhancing self-esteem, and discussed skills for resisting peer pressure. The curriculum was based on a goals-objectives-activities format. Elements of the curriculum format were defined in terms of developmentally appropriate tasks, were cost-efficient and easily implemented, and were submitted for evaluation by experts in substance abuse prevention. Evaluation was positive. Related materials, including questionnaires for experts who rated curriculum goals, objectives, activities, and the entire curriculum, are appended. The questionnaires provide the content of the curriculum. (RH)
