Enrollment Management.
Langley, Harry M.; And Others
A successful enrollment management system consists of a marketing program that ensures congruency between the image projected to prospective students and the actual environs of the college, and of means for the academic and social integration of students once enrolled. This presentation offers guidelines for the development of such a system, using Brevard College as a model for discussion. First, the paper discusses admissions and recruitment procedures, focusing on planning, targeting students that the college can attract and retain, and developing an institutional promotion package that is consistent in theme, style, and approach. The next section offers guidance in selecting components of a retention system. Three models of student persistence are presented, as well as ideas on supporting academic and social integration, and on mitigating the effects of financial problems, work conflicts, family problems, and stress. The next section describes Brevard's retention system, explaining mechanisms for academic integration such as placement, survival skills training, academic assistance, an early warning system, academic challenge, career exploration, and financial aid. In addition, methods of promoting social integration through extracurricular activities and peer friendships are explored. Finally, Brevard's goal of creating a learning environment and its special admissions programs are briefly discussed. (AJL)
