Computers for All Children: A Directory of Programs Fostering Equitable Access to Computers.
Crist-Whitzel, Janet; And Others
One of three publications of the Research on Equitable Access to Technology (REAT) project, this directory lists 52 computer education programs in northern California, Nevada, and Utah that have successfully addressed the problem of providing computer access to groups of students who are far less likely than others to use computers, i.e., low-income, minority, low-achieving, limited-English speaking, female, and rural students. Each listing provides information about the goals and objectives of the program as well as target students, general information, activities, equipment and software used, results obtained, implementation factors, and contact people. An introductory section describes the Far West Laboratory's (FWL) program and the survey process, and provides an overview of the equitable access issue together with descriptions of the three REAT publications and two related FWL publications. A list of other selected resources provides information on two non-FWL publications on equitable computer access, as well as a list of seven selected organizations concerned with computer equity. Indexes provide cross references to the programs by target audience, geographical location, and school level (elementary school, middle or junior high school, senior high school, and adult or continuation school).
