1987 New Hires and Total Employment, Massachusetts Public Higher Education.
Massachusetts State Board of Regents of Higher Education, Boston.
Data from a survey on patterns in the hiring of new staff, both noninstructional and faculty, in Massachusetts public higher education institutions are presented and analyzed. The survey found that more women and minorities are being hired as full-time employees. More women than men were hired during 1987 and a higher percentage of women were hired than were employed during that year. Similarly, higher proportions of minorities were hired than employed during 1987. The hiring patterns of women and minority faculty were found to follow those of the total newly-hired population. The proportions of women and minorities hired as faculty during 1987 were considerably higher than the percentages of those groups employed as faculty during that year. While there were proportionately fewer women among the newly-hired faculty than among all new hires, relatively high percentages of minorities were found among the new hires. Individual institutional data on faculty, administrative, and professional non-faculty employees and new hires are presented in tables by sex and minority group. (MSE)
