Preparing To Win: Report of the University of Nevada System Student Minority Outreach Task Force.
Nevada Univ. System, Reno.
In response to a Board of Regents request, a task force was established to study minority student recruitment, admission, and retention in the University of Nevada System. Comprised of representatives from all campuses, the group has compiled existing data on minority student participation in postsecondary education and on existing programs aimed exclusively at minority students, and met with representatives of Black, Hispanic, Asian, and American Indian groups throughout the state. Task force findings include these: the Nevada minority population proportion has grown 2.2% since the 1980 census; the proportion of minority school-age children has grown 2.6% from 1982 to 1988; minority high school graduation rates are less than those of Whites; with the exception of Asians, a smaller proportion of minority group members than Whites have attended 4 years of college; and state university minority enrollments peaked in 1985 and then declined, but still represent a smaller proportion of the minority community than of the White community. Recommendations include: a written policy endorsing and encouraging minority student recruitment, admission, and retention; institutional responsibility for support of minority recruitment and retention programs; a minority grants-in-aid program; and continued task force efforts. Lists/descriptions of minority programs for each campus within the University of Nevada System are appended. (MSE)
