A Training Program to Reduce "Visitation Stress" in Single Parents and Their Latency Age Children.
Clark, Ron
This practicum was designed to decrease single parent and latency age child stress associated with child and noncustodial parent visitations, and to improve children's school behaviors. A 9-session, 12-week education and training program for single mothers (N=6) and their elementary school age children (N=15), designed to reduce stress by enhancing the children's visitations with their noncustodial parents, was conducted. Extensive homework assignments for all concentrated on coparenting, parent-child communication, reorganizing as a single-parent family, and goal setting. An evaluation of single parent stress and children's behavior was achieved through the administration of a pre/post single parent stress survey, a pre/post child behavior index completed by both teachers and parents, and a program evaluation completed by single parents. Results of the practicum were very positive, with single parent stress reduced by a mean of 21% and children's school behavior enhanced by a mean of 50%. Parent-child relationships were strengthened, the stress of noncustodial parent visitations was decreased, and single parent family reorganization following separation or divorce was enhanced. It is apparent that single parent families caught in the grip of visitation stress can be helped through a program of education and training. This stress reduction allows children to function better and to behave more appropriately in the classroom. (Author/ABL)
