Effectiveness of the Parenthood Education Semester Course in Secondary Schools in Louisiana. Vocational Education Research.
Hunt, Sally N.; Mann, Mary Beth
A research project was conducted to determine the effects of the Parenthood Education semester course on Louisiana students' knowledge of parenting and child development and their attitudes toward children and parenting. Data were collected from 563 high school students in 16 randomly selected schools through their home economics teachers, using pretests and posttests. One-way and two-way analyses of variance of data from the posttest pointed to a marked lack of significant results. The only dependent variable that showed significance was "knowledge of discipline techniques." However, there were significant differences between groups based on race, religion, geographic region, and school size for "knowledge of child development,""knowledge of discipline techniques," and"attitude variables." The study concluded that treatment effects seem to be masked by other factors. Recommendations were made for inservice training of teachers who teach the parenthood education course and for further research using a larger sample. (KC)
