The Relationship of Postsecondary Vocational Business School Secretarial Curriculum to the Skill Requirements of Local Major Secretarial Employers.
Mott, Ruth M.
The purpose of a study was to analyze employers' secretarial skill requirements and the secretarial curriculum requirements of postsecondary proprietary business schools in the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, area and to determine if and how the requirements differed. Data were gathered through a survey mailed to the 10 largest nongovernmental employers in the Harrisburg area and the four area proprietary business schools that offer a secretarial certificate program. The questionnaires were formulated by a panel of experts from outside the survey area. The results showed that all employers required a high degree of typing proficiency and some proficiency in recorded dictation skills. Half of the employers did not require shorthand. All employers required word processing skills, and most required computer skills in varying degrees. Other skills employers wanted included telephone communication, business mathematics, business English, and interpersonal competence. Employers also desired a positive attitude. The business schools required a high degree of typing proficiency, and many required shorthand skills. However, some of the business schools did not require word processing or computer skills. In addition, skill levels for various types of typing skills varied between the schools and the employers. Curriculum changes were recommended to bring the schools' requirements in line with those of the employers. Fourteen tables and a seven-page bibliography are provided. The appendixes include the survey forms and a sample course description for secretarial subjects. (KC)
