Social Studies: Experiences in the Elementary Classroom.
Bowman, Debbie
Designed to provide a more positive learning experience in the area of third grade social studies, this project was concerned with improving the effectiveness of textbooks, developing critical thinking skills, providing group learning situations, and using the computer as an educational tool. Chapter 1 contains the outline of the research proposal and the methodology, while chapter 2 reviews the literature associated with how children learn social studies. The final chapter, chapter 3, contains three social studies units (a combination map skills/Chicago unit, a small group teaching unit, and a unit on the parts of a metropolitan community) used to test new teaching methods that incorporate more classroom discussion, participation, and group work. After each unit, an evaluative survey was given to the students and the surveys with responses are included. The appendix contains treasure hunt materials designed for use with the map unit, and a 24-item reference list. (DJC)
