Wisconsin Univ. System, Madison.
Presented is a report of a conference designed to explore ways of enhancing humanities education throughout Wisconsin. Five discussion groups explored humanities issues in relation to the following: the school curriculum; basic college education; careers; life-long learning; and economic development and the quality of life. The deliberations and recommendations for actions from these groups are included. Presentations from the following Wisconsin and national models for innovative humanities programing are summarized: (1) Stanford Executive Program in Humanities; (2) Columbia University Seminars; (3) Wingspread Seminars for Judges/Inmates and Staff Programs in the Humanities in the Division of Corrections; (4) School for New Learning Master of Arts Program, De Paul University; (5) National Humanities Faculty; and (6) Wisconsin Humanities Committee Summer Institute for Teachers. The keynote address, "The Humanities in Wisconsin Life: A Challenge" (Mark Curtis) and a speech, "Doing Justice: Law and the Humanities" (Shirley Abrahamson) are reprinted here in full text. The appendices contain a 53-item bibliography and a roster of conference participants. (DJC)
