READI. Computer Literacy for Rural Adults.
Emery, Mary
READI, a project administered by the Idaho Cooperative Extension Service, adapted to local conditions by community advisory groups, and taught by peer teachers, offers basic training in computer technology to adult residents of rural areas. The READI resource manual has five sections. The first section provides an overview of the project, including key project components, course design, and a rationale for computer literacy for rural adults. The second section is a resource guide for teachers, covering (1) the nontraditional facilitative approach to adult learners; (2) working with groups; (3) workshop design and techniques; (4) workshop evaluation; (5) classroom management; and (6) role plays. The third and fourth sections contain detailed instructional designs and participant materials for Units I and II. Unit I is an introduction to computers. In eight sessions, it covers general computer concepts and skills, as well as basic computer readiness skills in writing, math, decision-making, and problem-solving. Unit II focuses on computer applications to specific problems in the home, on the farm, and in business. It includes word processing, electronic spreadsheets, and data base managers. The last section of the manual includes a 30-item annotated bibliography for the computer user, a microcomputer glossary, and information on additional resources. 11 references. (SV)
