Career Student Follow-Up, Class of 1986-87.
Johnson County Community Coll., Overland Park, KS. Office of Institutional Research.
In January 1988, a follow-up study was conducted of students who had completed a career program at Kansas' Johnson County Community College (JCCC) in 1986-87 to determine their educational and employment status and the relationship of their work to their program of study. Telephone interviews were completed with 337 of the 482 graduates, and an additional 29 graduates responded to a mailed questionnaire. Study findings included the following: (1) 54.9% of the graduates had been employed at their current job for one year or less; (2) for 50.9% of the graduates, their current job was their first in the field; (3) the average wage of the graduates was $9.39 per hour; (4) 25.4% were enrolled in an educational program at the time of the survey; (5) 32.2% spent one month or less actively seeking employment after leaving JCCC, and 25.4% were hired after their first interview; and (6) though 88.5% rated their job as "excellent" or "good" overall, 30.4% felt that the potential for advancement was "fair" or "poor." In February 1988, surveys were conducted of the employers of 178 graduates of the 291 working in a job related to their JCCC training. Employers were asked to rate the graduates' conceptual and technical knowledge, work attitudes, quality of work, communications and interpersonal skills, and overall job preparation, and to provide projections concerning anticipated job openings and wages in the field. Responses from 82.6% of the employers indicated a high degree of satisfaction with the JCCC graduates, with 88% rating their job preparation as "good." (AYC)
