The Software Development Program described in this report was developed at Collin County Community College as a pilot associate degree program for the State of Texas. Drawing from an employer needs assessment and a DACUM (Developing a Curriculum) process, the two-year associate in applied science (AAS) program was developed to train scientific programmers in the competencies required to enter the job market as entry-level software engineers. Chapter 1 presents the methodology and results of three needs assessment surveys of local scientific development companies. Graphs are included, showing employers' rankings of the value of coursework in specific programming and technical skills. Chapter 2 begins with an outline of the DACUM process, which uses industry input to identify the competencies required of a specific occupation. This chapter lists the duties and tasks of a software engineer, provides the forms administered to selected workers at various companies to validate the importance of specific tasks to their job, and presents DACUM charts illustrating job duties and associated tasks. Chapter 3 contains an outline of the course requirements for an AAS in Engineering Technology and a semester-by-semester plan for completing the degree in two years. In addition, catalog course descriptions and more detailed course outlines and learning objectives are provided for each of the degree requirements. (AAZC)
