This course guide outlines the objectives and content for a one-day intermediate level continuing education course on monograph selection, acquisition, and management for health sciences librarians in medium to large-sized hospital libraries. Topics include: (1) characteristics of the scientific and technical monograph; (2) principles of collection development; (3) elements of a written collection development policy; (4) principles of selection, including specific criteria and resources; (5) the materials budget; (6) acquisition methods and procedures; (7) automation of selection and acquisition; (8) financial and statistical reports; (9) inventory and weeding; and (10) collection evaluation.
