Enrollments and Degrees. AIP Report.
Ellis, Susanne D.
Results of the American Institute of Physics' 1986-87 annual enrollment and degree survey for physics and astronomy are presented. The summary report contains information about the degree recipients of 1986 and enrollments for 1986-87. Ten-year trends are presented to illustrate change. The data are presented in tables accompanied by narrative analysis. Information for physics includes: trends in number of degrees granted (bachelor's, master's, and doctoral), major enrollments (juniors and senior), and graduate enrollments (total and first year), overall and by institution type; introductory physics enrollments; actual and projected number of undergraduate majors; trends in attrition by institution type; undergraduate majors by geographic region and institution type; trends in entering U.S. and foreign graduate students; full-time, part-time, and foreign graduate enrollments by institution type; regional distribution of teaching assistants by institution type; unfilled teaching assistantships for first-year graduate students; trends in actual and projected doctorates granted; degrees by region and institution type; and degrees granted by sex and minority group. Similar but less extensive information is presented for astronomy. (MSE)
