Vocational Training for Students with Severe Handicaps.

The book describes procedures used to provide nonsheltered community based vocational training to moderately and severely/profoundly handicapped students at the secondary level. The program is desgiend to enable students to make the transition to paid employment in two or more part-time jobs as a viable alternative to a single full-time job as well as a means of improving the individual's quality of life, and increasing the opportunities for interactions with nonhandicapped peers. Details of implementing this type of vocational training at the secondary level are explained as well as procedures for job search and development and job training including data keeping and movement of students across job settings. The first chapter provides a program overview and explains the program philosophy. Necessary steps before placement are detailed next and include referral, interview with the student and parent, making transportation arrangements, and establishing priorities when student referrals exceed resources. The third chapter describes the work of the placement specialist while the fourth details strategies for teaching job skills stressing behavioral theory. Considered in the fifth chapters is teaching associated work skills or behaviors. The recruitment, training, and skill maintenance of the volunteer is the subject of the sixth chapter.
