Working Together: A Parent's Guide to Learning Disabilities.
Weiss, Rhonda; And Others
Intended for parents, the guide provides an introduction to learning disabilities, the programs and services available to the learning disabled child through the public schools, the rights of parent and child, as well as suggestions for helping and advocating for the child. The first chapter considers characteristics of learning disabilities, cause, and outlook. Referral, evaluation, and decision making at a staffing (which includes the parent) are considered next. The third chapter explains what the individualized education program (IEP) must contain, the IEP conference, and IEP reviews. Varieties of programs are discussed in the fourth chapter and include the regular education program, the resource teaching program, and self-contained class, and special school placement. Specific parental and student rights in the areas of consent, notice, evaluation, least restrictive environment, records, and hearings are considered next. Suggestions to parents advocating for their child cover the initial staffing and IEP meeting, annual IEP review meetings, communicating with professionals, and questions parents should ask. Tips for parents at home are offered next followed by suggestions for planning for after high school. The final chapter lists resources and references including government agencies, organizations, and information sources. A glossary of frequently used abbreviations is also provided. (DB)
