A class was developed for 10 musically talented students in an elementary school, to enable the students to increase their musical interest and knowledge and to improve their music performance skills. Strategies for providing a more challenging musical environment for these students included: a pull-out class, teaching of music theory and composition accompanied by student performances, and individual student projects involving reports on music topics or performances of compositions practiced independently. A posttest on the subject of music theory and composition showed that each of the 10 talented students showed an increase in music understanding over the pretest. A teacher-made performance checklist showed improvements in music performance skills, and a pre- and post-attitude survey also showed that students' enthusiasm for music had increased.
