An Induction Program That Invigorates the New and Experienced.
Hilton, Cheryl D.; And Others
This collection of four interrelated papers is the record of a conference session which describes a staff development model jointly designed by the Franklin County Department of Education (Ohio) and Ohio State University. The session uses a three-tiered model to examine (1) a teacher cadre comprised of teachers instructing teachers; (2) mentors reflecting on their classroom roles; and (3) inductees experiencing teaching for the first time. The first paper, "The Roles and Responsibilities of the Critical Actors," by Cheryl D. Hilton, provides information about the definition and selection of inductees and mentors for the program. The second paper, "What Structures Support the Invigorating of Mentors?" by Sherry Kuehnle, describes the development of an instructional supervision model supported by three intersecting knowledge bases: knowledge about classroom processes; instructional supervision; and classroom observation. The third paper, "A Synthesis of the Teacher Leader Cadre," by Shirley S. Scholl, describes the teacher cadre component of the program, concentrating on needs assessment, development of improvement plans, and incentives offered. The final paper, "Lessons Learned," by Nancy L. Zimpher, evaluates progress during the 3-year initiative to blend personal and professional teacher development and includes a bibliography of 27 references. Appendices include a needs assessment survey and a bibliography of 43 references. (MLH)
