English Language Arts Syllabus K-12. A Publication for Curriculum Developers.
New York State Education Dept., Albany.
Prepared to assist administrators and other developers of curriculum at district and building levels, this syllabus outlines general criteria for an effective integrated curriculum in English language arts, suggests the instructional objectives that need to be addressed, and provides direction for the evaluation of student progress and program effectiveness. The syllabus is in eight sections: (1) Introduction; (2) Program Planning at the Local Level; (3) Characteristics of an Effective English Language Arts Curriculum K-12; (4) Strands in the Communication Process; (5) Providing a Strong Foundation for Literacy; (6) Listening and Speaking in the Language Arts Curriculum; (7) Composition in the English Language Arts Curriculum; and (8) Reading and Literature in the English Language Arts Curriculum. Each of the last three sections directs attention to the purposes, objectives, and focus skills of that particular aspect of communication, all of which support the development of interactive, interdependent, and mutually reinforcing processes that are necessary to understand and express meaning. An 57-item bibliography and six appendixes containing guidelines for keyboarding instruction, information regarding students with handicapping conditions, and other materials conclude the syllabus.
