This book of exercises is part of the package of materials developed for use in an English for Special Purposes project, which offers classes in reading, grammar, and emergency care attendant training for limited English proficient students. The exercises are designed to meet the need for early presentation of medical and allied health related grammar and vocabulary and introduction to specific structures with a high frequency of use in the target career field. The exercises are divided into 18 lessons. Although the focus of the exercises is improvement in language skills, they are also intended to reinforce openly the contents of the corequisite allied health courses. Specific topics covered in the exercises include use of the words "should,""may,""possible," and "be able to";"there is" and "there are"; "that,""who," and "which" commands; comparatives and superlatives; "closed-ended" questions; "yes/no" questions; equivalent noun forms of verbs; "open-ended" questions; "verb/noun" pairs; passive and active sentences; distinguishing between "if" and "when"; sentences with conditions; scientific and medical words as nouns and verbs; and complex sentences. An exercise with essential vocabulary and expressions concludes each lesson. Review exercises are provided as necessary. (YLB)
