Assessment of Educational Achievement in Asia and the Pacific. Report of a Seminar (Tokyo, Japan, January 20-February 1, 1986).

The High Level Seminar on Educational Achievement in Asia and the Pacific was organized in collaboration with the UNESCO Regional Office for Education in Asia and the Pacific (Bangkok, Thailand). The objectives were to exchange information and experiences on educational assessment at the primary and secondary school levels; to review major research and surveys on educational achievement and their findings conducted in the participating countries; and to identify common trends of research on educational achievement in the region. Part 1 of this report addresses in general the status, issues, and trends in the assessment of educational achievement in the Asia-Pacific region. After a preamble, the following topics are considered: (1) purposes of assessment; (2) structure and methods of assessment; (3) domains of assessment (cognitive, psychomotor, and affective); (4) equity and excellence; and (5) monitoring levels of assessment. A summary of recommendations and concluding remarks follow. Part 2 consists of reports from each of the participating countries: Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.
