Dynamics of Secondary Vocational Classrooms [machine-readable data file].
Weber, James M.; And Others
The purpose of this data collection effort was to compile national data on the instructional content and processes of occupational education programs at the secondary level. The database included 893 classrooms in 120 high schools, a stratified random sample representing each vocational program offered plus two nonvocational programs in each school. School types were comprehensive, vocational specialty, and area vocational in urban, suburban, and rural settings. Each classroom was observed on two different occasions during a one-week period. Survey instruments included a separate questionnaire and interview protocol for teachers, principals, and counselors; a student interview protocol, a syllabus evaluation form, and a summary data form for outcomes. The identification codes for the data included (1) three-digit site ID, (2) four-digit code for primary or consolidated metropolitan statistical area, (3) two-letter state abbreviation, (4) data type, and (5) interviewer/observer ID. These codes can be used to link all data related to a specific teacher and classroom. The resulting master data files include the following: (1) school file--data about the community, principal and counselor questionnaires and interviews, and summary outcome data (496 variables, 120 schools); (2) teacher file--teacher questionnaire data for observed and nonobserved teachers (267 variables, 2,251 teachers); and (3) classroom file--observed teachers' questionnaires and interviews, student interviews, syllabus evaluations, and classroom observation data (2,682 variables, 893 classrooms).
