This survey of 57 members of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) examines technical and management issues in providing remote access to their online catalogs, as well as with instructions and services for remote users. It is noted that most ARL libraries have not yet conducted studies to project the extent of use of remote access, although it is a viable reality in more than half of them, and more respondents believe it is too soon or the issues are too complex to identify causal relationships between the introduction of remote access and changes in other library services. In addition to the complete survey instrument and a summary of the findings of the survey, this kit contains examples of instruction for remote access users from the University of Kentucky, Ohio State University, and the University of California at Berkeley; examples of user aids from the University of California at Berkeley, University of Cincinnati, Georgetown University, Northwestern University, Virginia Polytechnic and State University, Wayne State University, Ohio State University, University of Waterloo (Ontario), North Carolina State University, and University of Utah; and materials on management of remote access, including job descriptions, from the University of Illinois and Rice University; a policy statement from the University of Kentucky; formats for user input from Michigan State University, State University of New York at Albany, and Dartmouth College; and access proposals from the University of Pittsburgh, University of Tennessee, and North Carolina State University.
