This overview of the role of microcomputers in public education covers the following topics: (1) the growth of microcomputers in schools; (2) the role of professional organizations and federal and state government agencies; (3) patterns of use in the schools, including instruction in computer science, instruction in traditional subject areas, and productivity skills; (4) implementation issues such as location, scheduling, access, integration into the curriculum, multi-use applications, and diversity in student and teacher experience; (5) impact on faculty roles and functions; (6) teacher training; and (7) software design, production, and evaluation. Two examples of approaches to computer use and a summary conclude the report. (30 references). (MES)
