A project was conducted to help nonreading parents who want to read to their children but feel that they are not good enough readers to do so. The primary objectives of the project were to demonstrate that there are children's books that beginning readers can read to their children, to offer suggestions about reading to children, and to provide opportunities to share experiences and concerns, and to practice reading some children's picture books in a supportive and nonthreatening atmosphere. Local education and community service agencies interested in participating in the family reading project were identified. Then, in collaboration with the Free Library of Philadelphia and nine of the local education and community service programs, eight two-part family reading workshops were held for nonreading parents. The first session of each workshop was hosted by a community program, and the second half was held at a nearby branch of the library. Overall, the project was quite successful and well received, the main problem being poor workshop attendance at some sites. It was felt that attendance could be improved by allowing for seasonal conditions and child care needs when scheduling future workshops.
