Strengthening Teacher Education: The Challenges to College and University Leaders.
Magrath, C. Peter; Egbert, Robert L.
Dealing with issues that higher education leaders must confront, this book examines the causes for concern about teacher education, defines the leadership role higher education should take in teacher education, and makes specific recommendations for redesigning the training curriculum and for attracting high-quality students to it. The education experts who contributed to the book offer a combination of perspectives on assessing and improving teacher education programs. The authors discuss how college and university leaders can improve teacher education on their own campuses and offer recommendations on a variety of matters--including how to set priorities, determine need and assign resources, build campuswide support, and encourage faculty commitment to program improvement. Ways are suggested in which higher education leaders can use the power and prestige of their positions to help enhance the status of the teaching profession and create and sustain a nationwide commitment to quality public education.
