AFS Orientation Handbook: Volume VI.
AFS International/Intercultural Programs, Inc., New York, NY.
This manual is a resource guide for teachers and administrators and was compiled to provide direction for planning an effective orientation program. An in-depth design is given which will enable participants to derive maximum benefit from an intercultural experience. Each of the sections includes detailed instructions for the preparation of the program. One section describes the coping skills enhancement techniques that are taught to the participants. Another section concerns pre-departure counseling. Returnees are provided opportunities to talk with newly selected participants in order to alleviate apprehension. A format for group training sessions is described and a list of resources available to the trainers and the students during their stay in the host country is provided. The entire program for two orientations, one on arrival and one on departure, is presented along with case studies describing such problems as changing host families, if this becomes necessary. A post-return support system for the students and their families is also available. Evaluation material administered to each participant is included. (NL)
