Astra's Magic Math. Teacher's Manual, Manipulatives, and Student Worksheets.
Brown, Judith; And Others
Astra's Magic Math is a beginning multi-sensory program that attempts to teach basic math skills through 22 sequentially developed self-contained units designed to combine manipulation, writing, and language activities. The units are first introduced to the large group to stimulate interest and develop concepts through oral language. Children then work independently as they experiment with concepts through manipulation of objects and completion of worksheets. Motivation is stimulated through the use of "Astra," a friendly character from outer space. Astra's Magic Math includes a calculator and a computer unit for classrooms with the appropriate high technology hardware. A lesson lasts about 20-30 minutes every day and materials are provided for a 1-year program. Lessons can be used for large-group instruction, small-group enrichment, or in an individualized program. The first part of a lesson unit consists of a class discussion during which the teacher presents manipulatives. The teacher then works individually with students who need reinforcement or enrighment with their worksheets. One homework worksheet per unit is provided, and parental involvement is encouraged. (TW)
