Views from the Top: How Community College CEOs See Their Occupational Roles.
Fain, Adeline E.
A study was conducted to investigate the role perceptions of the state directors of community college education in 11 states. The directors were asked to rate 67 managerial activities in terms the importance of the activity and the amount of time they spent on it. They were also asked to identify the activities needing more of their time and those they found most enjoyable. Study findings, based on responses from all 11 directors invited to participate, included the following: (1) respondents consistently gave the highest ratings, both in terms of importance and time alloted, to the activities associated with resource allocation; (2) the lowest ratings were given to activities involved in contract negotiation and grievance handling; (3) for five items, there was a discrepancy between the amount of time spent and the importance of the item, indicating that the directors spent more time than necessary "staying tuned to what is going on in competing educational organizations,""talking to different people to find out unofficially about the organization's plans or management decisions,""keeping professional colleagues informed about the organization," and "maintaining a personal network of in-house contacts through visits and phone calls"; and (4) the directors indicated a desire to spend more time than their present schedules allowed in activities associated with leadership and resource allocation. A 13-item bibliography and information on Mintzberg's model of managerial roles are included. (EJV)
