Community-Based Employment and Training for Adults with Developmental Disabilities. State-Wide Personnel Training for the Implementation of Community-Based Vocational Training and Other Domain Programs. Final Report.

This project studied the feasibility of implementing nonsheltered supported employment programs for Idaho's moderately to severely developmentally disabled adults. The project researched, developed, and implemented a community-based vocational training model; studied its compatibility with existing delivery systems; identified areas for change; offered solutions; and developed three replication sites. The traditional model for vocational training is described, followed by a presentation of the Moscow (Idaho) model. This model has the following features: single entry point for starting vocational services, use of integrated community-based settings for assessment and training, increased use of integrated community-based paid employment, increased options for vocational training, career decisions made based on experience rather than written/pictorial job descriptions, and long-term follow-up services. The three phases of the curriculum were assessment, training, and placement and follow-up. The project resulted in the placement of 20 adults in paid community-based employment. Appendices, which make up the bulk of the paper, contain career exploration lesson plans and forms, an adult assessment and training plan with examples of tasks and graphs for individual clients, and a reprint of a paper titled "A Job Skill Inventory Strategy Designed for Severely Handicapped Potential Workers" by Ken Belmore and Lou Brown.
