Teachers: Opinions and Status, 1987. ERS Educator Opinion Poll.
Protheroe, Nancy
Summarized in this report are the responses of the 1,222 public school teachers who participated in the 1987 Educator Opinion Poll (43 percent of the national sample). The survey instrument included both questions eliciting the opinions of teachers and questions about their status and experiences. Opinion questions covered such topics as the lead teacher concept, source and quality of assistance received in improving teaching skills, and the effects of recent court decisions concerning textbook content and treatment of religious values. The status and experience questions covered such topics as current class size, number of years teaching experience, annual salary, eligibility for merit pay, level of education, professional affiliations, and length of contract year. In addition, items such as those concerning the level of student mastery of material, degree of student preparation for required work, and quality of textbooks and other instructional materials provided in schools were included to develop a profile of the schools and their students. Tables summarize the data for all respondents and for the following subgroups: teaching grade level; career teachers/undecided teachers; sex; and age. (MLF)
