This directory lists institutions, state-by-state, that are conducting student science training programs in 1988. The directory is intended to help interested students find programs which will contribute to their academic development. Student science training programs are designed to provide talented high school students with educational opportunities in science, engineering, and mathematics beyond those normally available in courses or laboratory work in the students' schools. The primary means of accomplishing this is by bringing outstanding students into contact with the instructional staff, research personnel, and general resources of colleges, universities, and research institutions (private, industrial, and governmental). The programs are offered at different times, including summer, through the academic year. Three types of programs are described; (1) Research programs (involve students as junior associates of a research team or as principal investigators on a problem of appropriate difficulty, under the direct supervision of an experienced research scientist; (2) Courses (provide students with academic experiences not available in their schools for some reason--too high level, too few students interested, lack of qualified teachers, budget, etc.); and (3) Research/courses (provide course instruction in combination with offering students the opportunity to do some sort of research).
