A Program of Games and Activities to Increase Listening and Attentional Skills in Kindergarten Children.
Edleston, Charlotte
The primary goals of this practicum were to improve the listening skills of 47 kindergarten children attending half-day classes at an elementary school in a residential suburban community, and to remediate the attentional deficits of 2 students. Additional goals were to elicit the cooperation of parents in developing good listening habits in their children, and to share information about listening skills with fellow teachers. Activities implemented included: (1) the use of a listening center table; (2) daily group activities devoted to listening activities and games; (3) a motivational incentive program for good listening; (4) story time; (5) a dissemination workshop for teachers; and (6) distribution of related information to parents. Evaluation data indicated that listening skills improved in 45 of 47 children. Children with attentional deficits improved slightly late in the intervention. Parents were enthusiastic and cooperative, but few conducted follow-up activities at home. Related materials, such as sample pages from a manual prepared for the listening workshop, are appended.
