Implementing a Teacher Training Program To Develop Skills to Individualize Preschool, Primary, and Intermediate Classrooms.
Carlson, Sharon M.
A practicum was implemented to train teachers working at a Montessori Learning Center to individualize instruction at the preschool, primary, and intermediate grade levels. The primary goal was to educate teachers about the importance of meeting the individual needs of each child. A 9-month staff training program was developed that provided the instruction, strategies, assistance, coaching, and training in evaluation skills that teachers needed to function effectively in the context of an individualized approach to instruction. The program consisted of: (1) eight weeks of preliminary training sessions; (2) two weeks of student evaluations; (3) two weeks of teacher evaluations; (4) 27 weeks of program implementation and ongoing training sessions; (5) posttesting; and (6) final program evaluation. Four teachers participated in the training program. Evaluation data indicated that students grew socially, emotionally, psychologically, and academically. Teachers successfully individualized students' work, used various instructional methods, analyzed and evaluated students' progress, and improved their own knowledge of classroom materials and understanding of individualized instruction. Eighteen appendices contain related materials. (RH)
