An analysis of English sentences containing noun phrases (NPs) with extraposed complements argues that the extraposition (EX) is base-generated and not derived by any applications of the Move-alpha principle. A Move-alpha analysis is subject to substantial technical difficulties, and there exist cases of EX for which there is no plausible source in terms of Move-alpha. In particular, movement and ellipsis configurations show that phrases extraposed from both subject and object positions may be adjoined to the verb phrase at S-structure, a possibility that is inconsistent with the framework of assumptions and constraints needed for a movement analysis. Arguments that have appeared against base-generation are seen to support the proposal. Further implications of the nonmovement analysis are examined.
