Description and Evaluation of Training Course for International Graduate Student Instructors.
Fragiadakis, Helen
A course in English as a second language for international graduate student instructors at the University of California at Berkeley is described. In its first offerings, the course served students from three Asian countries and a variety of disciplines. It consisted of work in language, culture, and instructional techniques integrated into all class activities. The activities included videotaping and reviewing of class presentations, viewing tapes of other graduate student instructors in the process of teaching, pronunciation instruction, panel discussions, roleplaying, special events focusing on cultures, discussion of readings, classroom observations, and instruction in classroom techniques. After the course, students expressed increased confidence and appeared to understand the importance of interaction in the American classroom. Most appeared to have the same language problems with which they began the course, but had learned compensatory strategies for improving communication. The course instructor learned, through this experience, that the students do not need better control of English as much as they need to create interaction in the classroom. Planned adjustments in the course include increased videotaping and viewing and increased pronunciation instruction. A course syllabus is appended. (MSE)
